The Acoustic Commons is an emerging network of live environmental streams which draw attention to the unique sounds of particular places across Europe and beyond.
Over the next three years, the Acoustic Commons will develop work between Full of Noises (Barrow, Cumbria – lead partner), Locus Sonus (Aix-Marseille), CONA (Ljubljana), Soundcamp (London), Hellenic Mediterranean University (Crete) and Cyberforest (Tokyo). As the project proceeds, it will involve events, workshops and creative actions outside conventional cultural spaces, focusing on sounds as intangible resources which can be shared.
Duration of the project: 2019-2022
The project focuses on developing and implementing an innovative tool which we call the open microphone and it’s up in the locales of partner organisations, also in Ljubljana. We are developing the so called joint creative sources aimed at artists, scientists and the wider public interested in exploring environmental sound. The project will include artists, engineers, activists, scientists and other experts.Although there is increasing attention focused on the investigation and development of environmental sound archives, they are still often overlooked. Analytical comparisons with the past are thus impossible to make and can only be ’nostalgically’ speculated about. The project’s partners will develop an extensive set of digital tools enabling the dissemination and sharing of environmental sounds in real time. An online hub for sound archives will also be developed, as well as the tools and the software so that they can be used by the arts and science to promote ecological advocacy. Using digital technologies for production, distribution and use, ’specific soundscapes’ will be formed during the project, which will be made available for the public and later, hopefully, become the main database for future research of environmental changes and the changes of biological diversity in the landscapes where the microphones will be located.
